Math Adventure - Star Base Alpha is coming to Shorewood on March 21st at 5:30! This adventure takes place on an interplanetary space station. As a part of the crew, students will address engineering emergencies, explore new planets, and interact with visitors from other worlds. Crew members must solve math puzzles coded with clues to help them on their journey. This math night promotes the thrill of collaborative problem-solving in a friendly, non-competitive environment so that all students can have the opportunity to discover a love of math and the arts that lasts a lifetime. Register your team by March 7. The three-step registration process is described below.
Math Adventure is designed for teams of 4 students. Students will form their own teams. Parents will register the team through our team registration website (step 2). Students who wish to participate, but do not have a team, may register as a "free agent". Free agents will be placed on a team of their same-grade classmates.
Once your team is formed, or to sign up as a "free agent", visit the Math Adventure registration page (linked below) to register your team. Each team will register once, so you will need to identify a parent to lead this process. To register, you will need:
The fee to participate in Math Adventure is $12.50 per student. This fee is designed to offset the cost associated with running this event. Please use the button (link) below to access the Math Adventure payment page. The page will allow you to pay for 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 students.
Math Adventure should be accessible to everyone. If you would like to anonymously waive the registration fee, simply skip Step 3 and show up with your team on March 21st to enjoy the adventure! If you would like to pay extra for anonymous participants, just write "scholarship student" instead of a student's name when you checkout in Paypal.
March 7: Last day to register your team
March 11, 6:00-7:00: Parent/Volunteer Prep Night for Actors & Coaches (there will be no spoilers at this event. It's better that kids not attend, but please bring them if that's your only option)
March 21 - Math Adventure!
We need your help!
Math Adventure doesn't work without volunteers to run the stations. These are fun roles that typically involve goofy costumes, wild character acting, and facilitation of goofy tasks. To volunteer, please show up at Parent/Volunteer Prep Night on March 11. If you have questions, please email tommorganpta@@gmail.com.
Please reach us at info@shorewoodpta.org if you cannot find an answer to your question.
There is no food served at this event, but you are welcome to bring food and snacks for your team. The first 30 minutes of the event is considered team bonding time. Many teams use this time for a team meal before the adventure begins. Pizza is a popular choice, though you are welcome to bring whatever food your team decides on. Please remember to bring your own drinks, plates, and utensils.
Yes, you are welcome to bring your younger children. They are welcome to tag along with their older sibling's team. There will be parts of the adventure where they are on the sidelines watching, but they will still have a good time engaging with the wacky characters.
The challenge has to do with structure. This is a highly structured event with very clear steps. As the Math Adventure unfolds, teams are all over the school. Most kindergarteners (not all) have yet to develop the patience or attention span to handle two hours of step-by-step instruction. There is also a lot of (managed) chaos as teams are running from station to station. It's just too much for most kindergarteners to handle. However, if you have an older student participating on a Math Adventure team, and you will be there to supervise, please bring your kindergartener along.
Adult supervision is a requirement for every PTA event at Shorewood Elementary. Students must have parent or guardian supervision at all times. However, Math Adventure is a team-based event. For Math Adventure, every team must have at least one coach per team, though two or more coaches is ideal. In addition to coaching math, the coaches provide adult supervision throughout the event.
